Christmas Preparations

Luke 2:30-32 – For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel. (NIV)

"Five Friday Shopping Days 'Til Christmas" the sales flyer read, reminding me of the expectations our society has put on this one day each year. The first of these notices started appearing in my mailbox the week before Thanksgiving. While it is true Christmas is a wonderful time to remember family and friends with a thoughtful card or gift, I can't help but wonder if we as Christians aren't missing the intention of the day when we devote so much time in buying gifts to give, not to the Saviour Whose birthday we celebrate, but to one another.

Perhaps this year we can start to reverse the trend of a totally commercial Christmas to one where we give Christ back the place of honour. We could begin by spending as much time praying for the recipients of our gifts as we do in shopping for them. We could devote as much time in reflection on God's gift as we do in watching some television show that tells of a scrooge at Christmas. More importantly, we could set aside as much time in preparing our gift for Christ as we do in preparing our gift for the other people we love.

Prayer: Dear God, as we make our preparations for this holy season, help us to give Your Son, Jesus Christ, first place in our hearts and our homes. Amen.
