The Lumpy Mattress

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (NIV)

"It's too lumpy! Even the dog can't get a good sleep on it anymore." Buying a new mattress for the guest room had been put off long enough, and with this declaration, we decided it was time to purchase a new one. For the next few shopping trips, we sat on beds, poked at their tops, jiggled them up and down to test the construction, stretched out on them, and listened to enthusiastic salespersons prattle on about how much fabric and how many coils or springs were included in their features. There were plain mattresses, thick mattresses, and pillow top mattresses, and all came in various heights and widths, not to mention price tags. Every company seemed to be promising a marvellous night's rest if you bought their product.

As I listened to the promises and guarantees for a perfect sleep, I couldn't help but wonder how a better mattress would cure the restless spirit that keeps people awake at night. Will a new mattress help the young family's wage earner sleep well when the company for which they are working is closing? Does a good mattress guarantee the sleep of a parent who is concerned about a sick child, or a senior whose partner has died and who is facing the dark night hours alone? No, there are no such guarantees in the local mattress store for these situations, but I know where there is one. Jesus has invited us to come to Him and to learn from Him, and we will find true rest, guaranteed rest for our souls.

Prayer: Dear God, today we would ask You to take our burdens and cares and give us Your rest. Amen.
