The Narrow Gate

Matthew 7:14 – Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. (NKJV)

I recently had some pictures made for the wall in our office from our hot air balloon ride. The picture on the wall shows about a hundred sheep all running towards the opening in the fence. In the picture, the sheep are scattered as they run towards the narrow opening in the fence. As they get closer to the opening, the sheep are in one line, since in order to get to the next field they must enter the opening one at a time.

As I look at this picture it reminds me of today's verse from Matthew's Gospel. In our picture, the sheep have found the narrow gate and are eagerly trying to get through it.

We are all called by Jesus to go through the narrow gate that leads to life. Some people choose to go through and others reject it.

How much are we like sheep that have gone astray? How many of us have found ourselves going our own way and needing a touch from the Lord to get us back in His direction?

1 Peter 2:25 – For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. (NIV)

John 10:27 – My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. (NKJV)

Prayer: Father, help us to recognize Your voice and to follow You always. May we go out into the world and help to bring the sheep to Your fold. We recognize that we are like sheep that have gone astray. Please help us to find and stay on the narrow path that leads to life. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
