Just An Ordinary Day

Listen to this devotional:

John 6:8-9 – Another of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him, There is a little boy here, who has [with him] five barley loaves, and two small fish; but what are they among so many people? (AMP)

Some years ago, I invited a very talented Sunday School worker to come and present a lesson during the Vacation Bible School week. I was surprised when she arrived without any visual aids. She had been a very beautiful woman, but because of surgery due to cancer, her face was greatly disfigured. The children glanced at her face, but it was quickly forgotten as she began telling the incident of Jesus feeding the five thousand. "It was an ordinary day, when an ordinary little boy decided to go on an ordinary picnic. His mother made him a very ordinary lunch of rolls and two little fish, and he quickly made his way along an ordinary dirt track which led out into the countryside." It was not so much the relating of the incident, which was well known to many of her listeners, as it was her conclusion, which seemed to gather us all up, so that we were sitting amongst the recipients of the picnic in that green, pleasant meadow in the presence of Jesus.

Perhaps some of our days begin with the thought, "Another ordinary day." The little boy's lunch was very ordinary, but had the mother been present to participate in the sharing of the lunch, I believe she would have been amazed at the texture and flavour of that ordinary lunch which she had prepared. It had been blessed by Jesus, and nothing is ever ordinary when He is part of any event.

Today, as we experience another ordinary day, may we be very much aware of Christ's presence, changing an ordinary day into an extraordinary one, as we receive His blessing upon our lives and activities.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, we are so thankful that Your Son, Christ Jesus, was very much aware of the physical needs of the people of His day. We commence this day resting in the assurance that Your Son, Jesus, can produce a day greatly worth the living, because of His presence in our lives. We offer this prayer of thanksgiving in the precious name of Your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
