Treasure Seeking

Proverbs 2:4-6 – If you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. (NIV)

I have known several people who have won the lottery — and their lives were changed: some, sadly and destructively; others, who were good stewards, enriched their own lives as well as others through the money received.

I have to admit I find it hard not to be envious of a neighbour whose sister gave her money to build a beautiful home out of her winnings. I remember all the dreams I've had of what I would do if instant riches came my way. I would build a beautiful home and I would help others find the good life.

Yet I remember that I've been promised something much more valuable than earthly mansions, if I search for God's hidden treasure. Searching for God's hidden treasure is a lifelong task that involves patience and discipline, but it creates within us wisdom. Without winning a lot of money, I could still help people find the good life. It is done by sharing God's Word with others and encouraging them to seek His wisdom.

Many of us have intelligence, but few of us are wise enough to use this gift without guidance from the Holy Spirit in our lives. Wisdom that comes from "understanding the fear of the Lord" is greater than all the treasures we may seek. This wisdom enables us to find "the knowledge of God" in our lives.

Prayer: Help us, O Lord, to find our wealth and pleasure in the path You designed for us. Lead us to Your true wisdom and knowledge. Amen.
