"A giant. I want a story about a giant. The tallest giant in the world, please." These were the requests of a small boy when I offered to read a bedtime story.
"Okay. I'll try," I said, and I told him of a legend I'd heard in my travels in Northern Ireland. According to the legend, the giant Finn MacCool, from the county of Antrim, was challenged by the Scottish giant, Benandonner, to determine which giant was the strongest. Finn invited Benandonner to visit him in Ireland for the duel and suggested he'd build a causeway in order to make the visit possible.
As charming as these old legends are, I have found even more amazing stories of giants and power in God's Word, the Bible. One night I read:
Isaiah 66:1 – This is what the Lord says: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool." (NIV)
"Wow!" I said, as I caught a glimpse of the magnitude of God — higher than any mountain, deeper than any sea. This is the God who cares for me!
So often we try to bring our picture of God down to the level of our own experiences and comprehension. In so doing, we minimize God's strength and power, and as a result, we are left with a picture of a legendary giant instead of the God of the universe Who is bigger than all the cares of life, bigger than all the things that have challenged us, bigger than our despair. God Almighty is bigger than all our problems, bigger than all our troubles, and bigger than any mess we might have made in our lives.
Prayer: Dear God, it is so easy to forget Your majesty, Your power, and Your strength as we struggle to solve our problems. Today, help us to realize how mighty You really are and to come to You with all our cares. Amen.
