The Word Of God Never Changes

1 Thessalonians 2:13 – And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe. (NIV)

Recently on a Sunday afternoon, our grandchildren were here for a visit. The youngest of the three, now in her second year, is very active, and we all know when she is among us. I have glass-topped tables in the living room, and she delights in placing her fingerprints all over them.

At her age, there is no reasoning with her. As I watched and cringed, I thought, "When they have finished their visit, I will get the glass cleaner out and wipe away all the fingerprints."

It took until the next day before I got around to doing this, and when I did, I thought about how unique a fingerprint is. There are not two among the whole of humanity on earth that are alike. They identify us as individuals.

Similarly, God's Word speaks to us and leaves its mark on us as a seal, in that the Lord knows those who are His. 2 Timothy 2:19a records: "Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: 'The Lord knows those who are his.'" (NIV)

When I removed the fingerprints from the glass, they disappeared from view — but that didn't change my grandchild's fingerprints.

Sometimes as Christians, we feel we are far removed from God, for whatever the reason might be, but in fact, our identity with Him never changes, for we are sealed as individual children of God.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we come to You this day, praising and giving thanks for Your sacrifice to save us for all eternity, even when we turn away from God. For deep down in our hearts we know that in our identity as children of God, You never change, and we, being chosen and sealed by the Holy Spirit, are with You for ever. Amen.
