Godly Birds

Matthew 6:26-31 – Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you — you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, "What will we eat?" or "What will we drink?" or "What will we wear?" (NRSV)

I had difficulty sleeping and had been up a number of times. Finally, I went out to my rope swing on the porch and settled there. It was still dark, and in the darkness, I did what I usually do when I cannot sleep. I talked to God and shared my day, with the challenges that I and the people in my congregation were facing. As I sat there, the sun slowly began to rise. My attention was drawn to the birds and the variety of songs they were singing as the sun arose. I sat there once again amazed by how wonderful our creator God is — in that He made these birds with the ability to sing their hearts out. They were singing their praises to God at the beginning of the day without even knowing what the day would hold. I thought of the many mornings I rose out of bed and said, "Good God, morning!" instead of "Good morning, God!"

Maybe we all should follow the example of the birds and sing our praises to God as the day begins — before the business and noises of the day drown us out. Surely this is something for us all to ponder as we choose to walk by faith each day.

Prayer: Dear God, may we choose to be like the birds You bring into our lives. May we begin each day with words of praise to You, even when we do not know what will be happening through the day. May we rest in the assurance that You will care for us as You care for the birds of the air, if we choose each day to remain faithful to You — which we choose to do today. Amen.
