Guard Your Time

Psalm 139:17 – How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! (NKJV)

As summer winds down, one begins to realize that the warm, sunny days will soon be behind us. I thought it would be a good idea to do my devotional time outside in the sun. My husband and boys were to be going out on some errands, so I thought that I had the perfect plan.

I got my Bible, some paper, and a pen, and placed the lawn chair in the perfect spot facing the garden and fountain. There I was with warm, fall sun shining down on me, prepared to spend some time with the Lord. Not even five minutes had passed, though, when one of our boys found me and came to ask me a question before he went out. Again I was ready to begin, and not two minutes later, the other son came out. After sorting him out, I was ready again. This time I almost made five minutes, and then my husband found me. As I was still trying to get him on his way, I could hear the neighbour calling, "Hello, hello!" As I was talking to her, the boys came back outside, and then my neighbour's husband came into the yard. There I was with the Lord and five other people!

I am sure that all summer, our backyard had not been host to that many people at one time. It was not until the evening that I was able to get back to my time with the Lord. It had been on my mind all afternoon, and I could hardly wait to get back to it.

For us believers, it really is crucial that we guard our time with Lord. This incident shows us just how easy it is for our time with the Lord to be taken away or put off.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, we truly value our time with You in prayer. We are sorry for the times when we get off track and distracted. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
