Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 23:1-3 – The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. (NASB)

We lived on a farm when our children were small. We had milk cows, beef cows, pigs, a dog, and some cats.

We had never raised sheep. We knew nothing about them. A neighbour did, though. Often, his ewes would have twins. At times, the mother wouldn't accept both of her babies, or sometimes, the mother would die during the birthing process. Whatever the reason, at one point, he gave us twin lambs. We had to feed them with a bottle. They lived in a corner of our porch. We became quite attached to them. Their names were Romeo and Juliette. Romeo was weaker and never made it to adulthood. But Juliette was stronger, and soon, she was living outside.

Juliette was fun to watch. She played with the dog. In fact, I think she thought she was a dog. She followed Tippy everywhere he went. If he went into the shade to lie down, so would she. If he went to get a drink, Juliette followed. When it was time to eat, they were together. She was a gentle sheep. She would gently bunt our little ones over and wait for them to get up. Tippy was also a gentle dog. Maybe she learned it from him.

I have thought about how Jesus calls us, His children, "sheep". We are to follow Him wherever He goes. If He stops for refreshment, we are to do the same. We follow Him when we reach out to someone to help. It could be a physical need, an emotional need, or a financial need. Whatever it is, we know that Jesus is there before us. We just have to follow Him.

Let's be aware of His voice; let's listen to what He says; let's obey when we hear Him call.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You that You lead us. We know that we are safe when we follow You. Sure, things can be scary when we follow You. Sometimes, we have to step out of our comfort zones in order to follow You. But we know that You are with us, no matter what. Help us to hear Your voice and to obey Your call. Amen.
