God Turns Obstacles Into Opportunities

Habakkuk 2:2 – Then the Lord said to me, "Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others." (NLT)

A few years ago, I read The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson. In the book, the author introduces the reader to Ordinary, who lives in the Land of Familiar and feels he is a Nobody. The story in a nutshell describes the journey I took in order to fulfill my childhood dream — that of becoming an author.

In my mind, I was Ordinary. Illness, poverty, and self-doubt were the bullies that kept me from leaving my Land of Familiar.

One spring morning as I thanked God for the new day, He reminded me of my desire to write. I began to believe that with God's help, I could face my bullies and accomplish my dream. Timidly, I prepared to take the first steps to leave the Land of Familiar.

Bullies met me and said, "Your dream can't be accomplished now. You're too old." But I pressed on. Each time I overcame an obstacle, a strange thing happened: the obstacle turned into an opportunity, and the opportunity moved me closer to fulfilling my dream.

I learned that when we allow God to change our attitude, we can rise above the circumstances in our lives.

My newest book, "Meditations for the Journey from Heaven and Earth" contains a collection of my writings and is dedicated to the readers of the PCCWeb Daily and my devotional column in the Kings County Record. Today, I'd like to acknowledge the Daily staff and you, the readers, for your words of encouragement which have allowed me to write the stories on my heart — stories that point to the love and care God has for each one of us.

Prayer: God, help us today to look for opportunities to offer encouragement to someone who needs to know You are there to help them turn obstacles into opportunities. Amen.
