Will Power

Isaiah 50:7 – Because the Lord God helps me, I will not be dismayed; therefore, I have set my face like flint to do his will, and I know that I will triumph. (TLB)

There is a cute commercial running on television right now. It features a gal munching down on a bag of cookies. Mighty Will Power shows up to save her from herself. (Let me say that he is one puny-looking superhero!)

"Don't need you," says she, "Doing fine; maybe next week at my friend's party. She'll be serving cake."

And Willie slinks off in shame. But wait a minute! Gal is still eating cookies!

What is willpower anyway? Jesus sheds some light on the subject in Luke 11:7-8, the parable of the man who asks a friend for bread at midnight for another friend who has arrived on a journey. The friend replies, "I can't get up and give you anything." Jesus goes on to say, "though he will not get up and give him the bread …"

The man says, "I can't get up", but Jesus says, "though he will not get up".

Do we know the right thing to do? Let's not blame it all on poor, weak, pathetic willpower. No. Let's check out our attitude. Have we at least admitted to ourselves and to the Lord that we are stubbornly clinging to "cannot", while He gently points out that our problem is really "will not"?

Prayer: Lord, help us to face our own truth so that we can recognize Yours. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
