Commitment

Romans 10:13 – Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (NIV)

Psalm 37:5 – Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. (ESV)

There are a couple of young men in our city who are planning a bicycle ride in the Rocky Mountains. Their plan is to ride 100 kilometres a day. Doing so, the journey will take them three long days. They will have to take along every necessity — tents, food, and water. They have been preparing for this trip all spring and summer, riding long distances daily.

Recently, for a trial run, these two young men loaded their bicycles with the necessities for an overnight trip, and rode for 100 kilometres. There, they had to set up camp to see how well it all worked. Then, they rode back the next day. As I was being told about their first day, I heard how they encouraged each other to keep going. I asked if they had second thoughts about coming back the following day, due to exhaustion. They informed me that that had never crossed their minds. They were committed when they left, and they were committed to ride home again. They knew that help was just a phone call away. If necessary, they would have used their cell phone to call for a ride. The family would have been happy to help them.

When we ask Jesus into our hearts to give us eternal life, I believe we plan to be committed to the Lord all of our lives. We commit our ways to Him for Him to direct us. Sometimes, though, we are so exhausted physically, spiritually, or emotionally that we need help. We can't do life on our own. Our help is often just a prayer or a phone call away.

Are we humble enough to call on the Lord for help? Are we humble enough to make that phone call? Are we humble enough to engage others in our lives?

James 4:6 – In fact, God treats us with even greater kindness, just as the Scriptures say, "God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble." (CEV)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help! We are committed to You, but often, we get stuck. So many times, we don't know that we need help. Also, so many times, we don't know what to do when we need help. Help! Help us to really know that You are just a prayer away, and that family and friends are just a phone call away. Amen.
