Call Her Blessed

Listen to this devotional:

Proverbs 31:10 – An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. (ESV)

Years ago, when my siblings and I were sitting around the table at a meal time, the topic of conversation was Proverbs 31, from verse 10 on. The passage starts out talking about an excellent wife and how she is far more precious than jewels. It talks about how she does her husband good and not harm. She works and is not idle. She reaches out to those in need. She is sure that her family is clothed and fed. Her clothing consists of strength and dignity. She is kind and wise.

Then verse 28 reads, in part, "Her children rise up and call her blessed."

My brother stood up and said to our wonderful mother, "Blessed."

We all laughed. It was a fun time around the table that evening.

And yet, what truth! We may appreciate our mother, and what she has done for us. We may respect her and care for her. We may see her virtues. But how often do we tell her? She has likely poured her whole life into our lives — often going without, so that we could have new clothes, new shoes, or even food to eat, at times.

Let's not wait until Mother's Day, but tell her often how much we appreciate what she has done for us. Time is short. Tomorrow may not come.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 – Everything on earth has its own time and its own season. There is a time for birth and death, planting and reaping. (CEV)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, so many times we don't appreciate fully what You have given to us. One of those things is the gift of our mothers, who have brought us into this world, cared for us, wept for us and with us. Please help us to be aware of the sacrifices that they have made over the years. Even if our mothers have already gone to be with You, we can still appreciate them. We want You to know how much we cherish the saints now in Your presence. Amen.
