Our God, The Rock

Listen to this devotional:

Our Australian rock wallaby makes its home in rocky outcrops dotted around the country. It is an agile, nimble, skilful creature, which climbs the rocky crags of its home with ease. It leaps gracefully across even the widest crevices, using its long, slender, fluffy tail as a rudder to help keep it balanced. In the heat of the day and to protect itself from predator dingoes and foxes, the rock wallaby wisely rests and shelters deep in its cool rock home.

Another agile little animal is the cony, which God has also gifted with wisdom for living. Knowing their own natural defencelessness, conies too, make their homes in rocky outcrops.

Proverbs 30:26 – The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks. (KJV)

As the clan feeds, the male head of the clan keeps watch, and utters a warning cry if a predator appears. Such a cry sends the clan scampering into the safety of their rock homes.

Good news! I, for one, am relieved that we Christians don't have to be as physically nimble and agile at rock climbing or at burrowing deep for rest and security from enemies as the cony and rock wallaby are. King David speaks of God Himself being his rock, refuge, fortress, and strength.

Psalm 31:1a,2b,3a – In Thee, O Lord, I have taken refuge. Be Thou to me a rock of strength, a stronghold to save me. For Thou art my rock and my fortress. (NASB)

Psalm 61:2b,3 – Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. (KJV)

I'm happy to say, no matter which half of the last century we were born in, we only need to be fit, agile, nimble, skilful, and wise enough spiritually to turn to our God, the Rock, to have all the safety and security we need.

Our ever-powerful God is also a place of fellowship, love, comfort, teaching, and instruction. He Himself is a perfect, soothing, healing balm to any hurts, wounds, sicknesses, or diseases we may incur.

In Him, we could not be stronger if we were giants. In Him, we could not be safer if we were in heaven.

Prayer: O Lord, our Rock, we rejoice in Your perfect protection and loving comfort. We happily sing the song of Moses: "Ascribe greatness to our God! The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He." (Deuteronomy 32:3b-4 NASB) In Jesus' blessed name, thank You. Amen and Amen.
