Psalm 91:1,4 – He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge. (NKJV)
"El Shaddai", the lovely song recorded by singer Amy Grant, inspired my study of the Hebrew names of God. In the course of my research, I gained new insight into the profound nature of "El Shaddai", which means "God Almighty". The almightiness of God does not involve His ability to perform miracles at any time, but rather His ability to carry out His divine plan. For many Old Testament saints, this name was associated with fruitfulness and blessing.
"El Shaddai" also depicts the tender, motherly qualities of our Lord. He has the power to nourish, sustain, and protect those who belong to Him. King David affirms, "Because Thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice." (Psalm 63:7 KJV) Today's Scripture portrays the image of a bird's wings covering her young. Jesus expressed this same sentiment: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing." (Matthew 23:37 NIV)
One of the lyrics to the song "El Shaddai" communicates God's amazing power in these words: "Your most awesome work was done through the frailty of your Son." Contrary to the popular views of the world, God revealed Himself in His Son, Jesus Christ. Only He has the authority and power to save, bless, and defend those who put their trust in Him.
By faith, we can enter the secret place of the Most High. Let us rejoice in His power, blessings, and grace. Under the shadow of His wings, we will find shelter from the storms of life, and the fellowship of the Almighty shall be our peace.
Prayer: Almighty God, it is a privilege and an honour to worship You in Your holy sanctuary. We thank You for Your great power and love ultimately revealed in Your Son, Jesus Christ. With thanksgiving and praise, we offer our hearts to Him, that we may experience the fullness of Your blessings and grace. Amen.
