Ezekiel 47:10 – Fishermen will stand beside the sea. From Engedi to Eneglaim it will be a place for the spreading of nets. Its fish will be of very many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea. (ESV)
On a recent fishing trip, we were able to try out our new fishing net. After baiting three lines, we cast them into the water. After a few minutes, I felt that knowing tug on the line — I knew a fish had found the bait. As I reeled it in, the boys pointed out to me through their laughing that it was not a candidate for the net. After the boys had finished laughing, it was time for the picture as I laid my catch across the palm of my hand. It didn't even cover my hand; it was no more than two inches long. Back into the lake went the fish.
I prepared my line again and cast it into the water. It was only a few minutes later that again I felt that tug on the line. As I began to reel it in, I knew that I had not caught the same fish again. The boys were on the other side of the boat with their fishing lines. I knew it was going to be a big one, so I called to the boys to get the net. After my last catch, they were not too quick to respond. They thought I was joking. After a few more shouts by me for them to get the net, one of them grabbed it — and into the boat we hauled an eight-pound bass. Now, this fish not only covered the palm of my hand, but it hung over both sides. It turned out to be the biggest catch of the season.
What happened that day in our boat led to a talk about how we are to be fishers of men — and to be alert when someone is in need and not to assume that because they have needed help in the past, their next cry for help is less important.
Mark 1:17 – Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." (NKJV)
We need to be alert for these calls and be ready to respond — from either side of the boat that we are working from.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to be in tune with Your Spirit, and respond with love, caring, and comfort to a world in need. We know that it is not by our own efforts that this will take place, but by You living in us. Thank You for the lessons of the Bible to which we can relate and which we understand in our everyday lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
