Philippians 4:11 – Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. (ESV)
Hebrews 13:5b – Be content with what you have. (NIV)
Spring is a wonderful time of year. The weather warms up, the snow has melted, the grass begins to grow, the trees leaf out, tulips and crocuses and daffodils poke through the ground to delight us with fresh colour and fragrances. Not long behind are lilacs blooming, peonies blossoming, and annual flowers in the ground growing. What a great time of year!
We've had a cool spring this year, but have enjoyed a few warm days on which I could be out digging in the dig, raking dead leaves, and bagging garbage that has blown into the yard over the winter. One day, we woke up to a few inches of snow on the ground. What a shock! Our first reaction is grumbling and complaining that it is cold and there is snow and it is supposed to be spring.
I was out and about. When I returned, I noticed the birds in the area were singing and singing. It made me stop and listen for awhile. As the wet snow was blowing down, the birds seemed happy about it. It seemed like they didn't mind the weather at all. Or maybe, just maybe, they chose to sing in spite of the weather. Maybe they chose to give God praise for the moisture that we were receiving, rather than complain about it. Maybe they were sheltered in amongst the branches of trees and were quite cozy. Maybe, for them, it was a time to relax and huddle together … and to choose to be content.
What a wake-up call! I realized how unthankful I was. The moisture is good. We much prefer that it come in the form of rain at this time of year, but the truth is, we would likely complain about that, too.
We can choose how we will act in any given situation. We can choose to rejoice and sing and be content, or we can choose to complain bitterly. What will our choice be today?
Prayer: Thank You for the birds, Jesus. We love how they sing so cheerily and can just brighten our days. We love how nature can teach us so many lessons, if we but listen. Help us to make right choices. Help us to be content today. Amen.
