Choose Wisely

John 12:36,37 – "If you walk in darkness, you don't know where you're going. As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you, and shining through your lives. You'll be children of light." … All these God-signs he had given them and they still didn't get it, still wouldn't trust him. (MSG)

I began my day, as I always do, reading my Bible, praying for family and friends, enjoying the view from my sunroom, and watching the birds at the feeders. All of a sudden, my eye caught a bright flash of colour — sunshine yellow — a beautiful American Goldfinch, the first one I had seen at the feeders. What joy! Instantly, my day was brighter by seeing this little bringer of light into the still drab, winter-weary garden, changing my day from darkness to light!

Life can also be a matter of light or darkness. We need to choose wisely in how we live. Light signifies a life that is open, honest, and pure in thought, word, and deed. A life of darkness, which is appealing because we get to do what we want, can put us in the tenuous position of losing our freedom by coming under the control of others, and of losing the respect of those we love by leading us into demeaning lifestyles, where we no longer even respect ourselves, and we fall into the trap of pleasing people who have dark minds and spirits. The alternative is difficult: believing in and trusting in a God we cannot see, but who is the source of all light.

Many years ago, new-found Christian friends helped me to re-learn trust in a God I could not see. They helped me to see that by trusting in this way, each new day became brighter and brought joy and renewed hope, instead of dread. I chose to follow the advice they showed me in the Bible, and I began trusting in God. My life became filled with purpose, respect, love, and hope. I found a calm that was not of my own making when I gave up trying to control my life. I liked the way I felt when I was in His presence, and I still do. Just as a goldfinch can bring light into a garden, so God, through our inviting Jesus into our lives, can bring life-giving light to our hearts.

I pray for each of us that we choose the pathway of light in life, that we become willing to trust in the wisdom of the Bible, and live according to its guidelines. It can change our lives! It will not guarantee a life without trouble, but it will ensure that we each have an inner strength to draw upon when life becomes too hard to bear.

John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (NKJV)

Prayer: Abba, Father, grant us the courage and the wisdom to choose what is right for us, what is good for our lives. Help us find the lighted pathway and step out of darkness into a life that is filled with You, with Jesus, with love, kindness, and respect. In Jesus' precious name, we pray. Amen.
