Scenes Of Wonder

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 33:8 – Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. (NKJV)

This will be the sixth year that our church has presented "Scenes of Wonder" — a display of over two hundred crèches/nativity scenes from all over the world. The crèches are brought in by members of our congregation and our community. They are set up in our Christian Education hall, and the public is invited to come and view the display. Many, many hours of work go into preparing for this event, and it is truly a scene of wonder.

As we approach the seasons of Advent and Christmas this year, may we come with a renewed sense of awe and wonder at the realization of what God has done for us. Our sinfulness prevents us from living a full and abundant life and having a good relationship with God. Sending His only Son, Jesus, as a baby at Christmas was the first step in repairing this situation. Thirty-three years later, Jesus paid the penalty of death for our sin with His own perfect life, sacrificed on a cross — God's amazing gift to a world of sinners!

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (NKJV)

This amazing gift is for each and every one of us. To accept the gift we need to:

  • Confess our sins to God ("for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" Romans 3:23 NKJV)

  • Accept His forgiveness ("If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9 NKJV)

  • Invite Jesus Christ into our lives ("But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name" John 1:12 NKJV)

Will you receive God's wondrous gift this Christmas? Will you come and worship this Baby born for us — our Saviour, Christ the Lord?

    What can I give Him, poor as I am?
    If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
    If I were a wise man, I would do my part;
    Yet what I can I give Him — give my heart.
      – Christina Rosetti

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for this season of Christmas and all the joy it brings. Keep us from being so full of busyness that we forget the Christ Child whose birth we celebrate. Open our hearts to receive Him anew. May we be more aware of Your presence in our lives in the days ahead as we prepare to celebrate the wondrous birth of the Baby in the manger. In His name, we pray. Amen.
