Genesis 1:16 – God made two great lights — the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. (NIV)
The stars have been God's masterpiece for centuries. They have always thrilled me, especially on a beautiful starry night. One night, years ago, we were at Camp Douglas on such a night. We just had to get the campers up after midnight to see the heavens. There was also an extra sight to see that special night: thousands of fireflies! Probably the campers haven't forgotten either: God's spectacular display.
It is difficult to see stars in a brightly lit city or town. On the other hand, it is also difficult to pray to God when we are surrounded with manmade stars of the acting variety. Do we have a spot where we meditate each day, or is God crowded out by life's activities? Sometimes I feel rushed off my feet, looking and looking but never quite finding the way God has laid out for me. Is it just me, or is it our busy life today? Consequently, I have found it best to have my devotional time in the morning. How appropriate that is, since Jesus tells us in the book of Revelation that He is the bright Morning Star:
Revelation 22:12,13,16 – Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star. (NIV)
Others seek God at bedtime after the night sky has turned dark and the stars have come out. The Morning Star, however, is our wonderful Saviour, Jesus Christ, who now leads us faithfully through each day and gives us peace at night for an untroubled sleep. Here is the Star of a God-given promise not only to be with us always, leading us safely along through each day and night, but also to return soon to take us to be with Him forever!
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for guiding us through each night and day as we turn to You. We need Your presence every moment of every day, for without You, we are lost. We think that we know what to do and how to do it, but when You come into our day, everything takes wings of promise, and we rejoice. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
