Psalm 91:1-2 – He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust." (NKJV)
Every morning when I take my dog for a walk, I stroll down a street that is lined on both sides with a variety of tall maple trees. Their top branches bend gracefully over from each side to touch one another. This forms a long, beautiful archway of nature to walk through, and produces a feeling of serenity in my spirit.
One morning as I walked through this area, I believe that the Lord reminded me of how He has covered me in the past through difficult times, and is currently doing the same with present struggles as a caregiver. Knowing that the Lord is there all the time in our life's journey gives us confidence in His loving care.
It's important to dwell in the secret place of the Most High God each day in our devotional time with Him, in reading His Word and praying. Otherwise, our spirit, soul, and mind will not be sensitive to hearing His voice. I often pray for my community as I walk my dog, and I have had some very meaningful conversations with folks one-on-one. I have sensed God's covering even in my conversations.
It has been said of the evangelist Smith Wigglesworth that "he rarely prayed for an hour's time, but never let an hour go by without praying" and that he walked the streets continually praying in the Spirit. He obviously realized that he needed the covering of the Holy Spirit through prayer to help him in his challenging ministry.
As believers, we should desire and sense God's covering at all times. When situations come against us and we feel weak, we can ask, as did the psalmist, "Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings." (Psalm 17:8 NKJV)
Prayer: O God, thank You for Your covering over our lives. May we ever sense Your care and love toward us in the good times and the bad. We pray that Your presence and power and protection from the enemy will be realized in our daily walk. In Jesus' wonderful name, we pray. Amen!
