The Undo Button

What a glorious day it was when I discovered the undo button on my computer! "Undo" is a command in many computer programs that allows us to undo almost anything that we have done.

With a click on the button, I can undo my last action or even my last several actions. What a relief! If I make a mistake, it can quite easily be undone.

Here are some definitions that I found for "undo":

  • to make of no effect or as if not done: make null: cause to be as if never done
  • to cancel or reverse the effects or results of (a previous action)
  • to change or stop the effect of (something)
  • to do away with; erase

What a glorious day it was when I discovered that my sins were forgiven! I've made a lot of mistakes in my lifetime. Many of them could not be undone. However, all of them can be forgiven by God (and forgotten). As Christians, when we make mistakes, we can't always undo our actions, but we can know that we are forgiven. In God's eyes, it's as if they had never been done.

1 John 1:9 – If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NRSV)

Psalm 32:1 – Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. (NRSV)

Ephesians 1:7 – In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace. (NRSV)

As we enter into a brand new year, we may not be able to undo all of our actions in the past year, but we can begin again with a clean slate:

  • a brand new opportunity to live our lives the way that God is calling us to;
  • a brand new opportunity to be the people that God created us to be;
  • a brand new opportunity to allow the Holy Spirit to live and work in us.

Are you ready for the challenge? Don't repeat the same mistakes that you made in the past year!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we are grateful that when we come to You and confess our sins, You are faithful to forgive us. Not only do You forgive, but You also forget. We are grateful for a new year and new opportunities to live our lives in ways that are pleasing to You. We are grateful for Your Holy Spirit Who enables us to be the people that You want us to be and to do the things that You want us to do. Help us to trust You and sense Your presence with us in the year ahead. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

    Thank you for your devotional this morning. Your prayer is for me as well.

    Dee,
    I too was excited when I found the undo button. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you Dee for this reminder of God’s forgiveness when we turn away from our sin. Blessings.

    Amen Dee! What a blessing we have in Christ. I too was ecstatic when l first discovered that button.
    Happy 2017.

    Dear Dee,
    Thank you for your forgiveness and love — grace — devotional.
    Continue to write devotions like this one. We all always need them.

    Dee
    Thanks for the reminder. We are not all perfect — far from it! But thanks be to God that He gave us our salvation through His Son Jesus that we have a way to “unbo”!

    I am a fan of that undo button on the computer, good for fumble fingers like I have.
    What a great idea to relate that to God’s forgiveness.
    That thought will help a lot of people who feel guilty and need “Blessed assurance”.

    I appreciate your devotional. And am so thankful my sins are forgiven.
    I tend to disagree with you on one point though. Yes God does forgive. But I don’t think He forgets. Forgetting is a human thing. I think He chooses to remember them no more. Hebrews 8:12. He’s God. And how can God forget.
    I think that’s different than forgetting.
