'Those' Young People

Friday, May 9, 1997

Deuteronomy 6:7 – Recite (these words) to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when your rise.
Proverbs 22:6 – Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.

A hundred years ago people were different. We were raised on the stories of how hard our grandparents worked, especially as children, and we were told to follow in their footsteps. In the Pictou Advocate of November 1895, an editorial began with these words:

They tell us that the young people are losing their enterprise nowadays, that the times when boys showed spunk are gone.

The editor lamented the situation in that advanced year of 1895 and wished for the old good old days when men were men. These were your grandparents and great-grandparents they were talking about, by the way. Did they ever amount to much?

They did, by the way, and the world went on.

Prayer: Help us hold fast our faith in the children and youth of today as they grow and mature and seek to become all that you created them to be in Jesus Christ, our Lord and our model for all life. Amen.
