Return To Me

John 3:16 – For God loved the world so much that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life. (GNB)

One recent evening, my husband and I went out to see the movie, Return to Me. This romantic comedy is the tale of a young man, Bob. He loses his wife, Elizabeth, in an automobile accident. Grace, a single young woman, receives Elizabeth's heart by transplant. Grace would have died without a new heart. Her story turns out differently. Bob meets Grace and falls in love with her about a year after Elizabeth's death.

Grace is beginning to live a fuller life. She is in the process of discovering herself. Bob is beginning to live again, to get past the pain and grief of Elizabeth's death. Bob and Grace are developing a relationship with each other. They face a dilemma when they discover that Grace has Elizabeth's heart. Will they accept the gift of new life together or will they reject it?

This story reminds us of our Christian faith. God, who created us, loves us. God is able to see that we cannot live without help. God sends his only Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross. We are offered new life. Will we accept or reject this gift?

Grace is overwhelmed. Elizabeth's tragic death means a new heart and a chance for full life. Grace is truly grateful for the gift of a new heart. If we really think about it, we will be overwhelmed by the outpouring of God's love in sending Jesus to die for us. Our hearts will be full of gratitude for this priceless gift of life now and forever.

Prayer: Lord God, you have given us life. You gave us your only Son, Jesus Christ, so that we can have life now and forever. Help us to be filled with joy and gratitude. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
