Ask And It Shall Be Given

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (NIV)

The other weekend, my son and I were shopping at the Target store for a birthday present for my wife. She wanted a pedometer so she could keep track of how many miles she walked each day for exercise. We walked up one aisle and down the other, amidst every sort of gizmo and gadget you could imagine (and many you couldn't), but we were unable to find what we were looking for.

As is usually the case in situations like this, there was not a sales clerk in sight. There was, however, a red phone with a label, "Can't find what you want? Pick up the phone and call for help", which is what we did. After a little bit of confusion over exactly what we were looking for, the voice at the other end of the line directed us to the appropriate aisle, where we found our pedometer.

As we were walking out and discussing our latest misadventure in shopping, I noted that it just goes to prove that scripture is right — "seek and ye shall find, ask and it shall be given". My son looked at me with that pained look that teenagers give their parents when they are being an embarrassment, and said, "Dad, you don't have to quote scripture for everything we do."

His words reminded me, and I reminded him, although he is in fact a very faithful person, that there is scripture that is appropriate for every occasion and every challenge that we face. Scripture is not something that is reserved for Sunday at church, but rather it was written to guide us as we go about our lives each day. We all need to study Scripture diligently every day so that we will be knowledgeable enough to know the answers that God has given us for each of the challenges, big and small, that we will face. And it doesn't hurt to quote scripture as a reminder to ourselves and those around us.

Prayer: Gracious Lord, we thank you for the guidance you have given us through the prophets, the apostles, and, above all, through Christ Jesus. Teach us to sit at your feet and study your Word, so that we may better know how to live our lives according to your will. Amen.
