I Wondered As I Wandered

John 19:17-18a – Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). Here they crucified him. (NIV)

Along the road that led to Golgotha I wandered, thinking of Jesus when he was brought to this place to be crucified and humiliated. This was a common spot for crucifixion, close to the road, so that passers-by could look at those who were put to death in shame.

This day, I was a visitor to Israel and present at the place of the Skull, when my attention was drawn to the sound of something very busy. I peered over the edge. There it was: a bus station for the local residents.

I came to this place in reverence, only to discover that those on the street had no interest in this sacred place. Business went on as usual.

Is this the position of our hearts today? Have they been so hardened as not to see and to seek the Holy One of God, Jesus Christ, who suffered physically, emotionally, and spiritually, who was humiliated, and who died upon the cross, in the proximity of this place. Here, our Saviour gave His all for us, that we might be saved from our sin to eternal life.

Prayer: Dear Lord,. we who believe in Christ and are saved, come to You this day seeking Your help to spread the word. We pray for those who have heard and refuse to believe, and we leave them in Your hands — trusting. Thank You for Your Son who died at the place of the Skull, to cover our sin by His precious blood. In His name we pray. Amen.
