A Divided Heart

Colossians 2:6-7 – As you have therefore received Christ, [even] Jesus the Lord, [so] walk (regulate your lives and conduct yourselves) in union with and conformity to Him. Have the roots [of your being] firmly and deeply planted [in Him, fixed and founded in Him], being continually built up in Him, becoming increasingly more confirmed and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and abounding and overflowing in it with thanksgiving. (AMP)

Some years ago, I became a Canadian citizen. I love Canada. I love the wide expanse of this wonderful country with its breath-taking Rocky Mountains, and the constant motion of the oceans which line our land on the east and west. I have travelled in Newfoundland to where the tree line ends. I have enjoyed and love it all! However, deep in my heart there is a pulling for my island home, Britain, now called the United Kingdom. A herd of fat cattle supported in a field the size of a handkerchief — the narrow lanes which connect village with village — yes, I love it also!

I have a divided heart regarding my physical roots, but I thank God that my spiritual roots are firmly and deeply planted in Him, because of the gentle and continuing faithfulness of the Holy Spirit. As committed Christians, looking back over our lives, are we not amazed at the continuity of our Christian witness? If we were able to share the challenging experiences which life has presented to us, would we not be amazed at our steadfastness? Then we would discover, together, that this stability is not because of any particular strength of personal character, but because of the wonderful person of the Holy Spirit. May we, together, meet the challenges of this day, knowing that whatever may happen, we have an ever-present Help, who encourages our heart, and urges us onward. At the close of this day, may we reaffirm again that we do not have a divided spiritual heart?

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, what a joy it is to come into Your presence this day, knowing that You have all the time that it takes to listen to us, and that we are very special to You. We know that we do not need to tell You every detail of our lives, because this is all known to You. We enter this day with confidence, because You know what lies before us, and because of Your love, You will not allow anything to happen to us, which we cannot overcome with Your help and be more than conquerors. We come into Your presence with thanksgiving through the matchless name of Your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
