The Dusty Chandelier

Listen to this devotional:

1 John 1:5,7 – This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (NIV)

I had vigorously cleaned and polished my home during what I referred to as "spring cleaning", and I was pleased with the results. A few nights later, we were eating in the dining room, when my five-year-old granddaughter was heard saying to her mother, "Look at the dust on Mema's chandelier."

The truth dawned on me: I hadn't dusted the chandelier, because without the light turned on, I hadn't seen the dust.

This reminded me of Jesus as the light of the world. We may think we are doing pretty well with our lives. We live in a good neighbourhood, go to a nice church, have a good business, and enjoy socially acceptable friends. We seem to have a world of light, and we avoid the shadows.

When the searchlight of Jesus sweeps over our lives, it lays bare the shadows, the fronts, and the false standards we put up. It is not easy to welcome His light into our secure world. It reveals us as we truly are. It calls us to reveal His light in our lives. This is the light of truth that sets us free.

Prayer: Lord, we know You are the author and example of the true light. Perfect in us Your image that we may walk in Your light. Forgive our failures and mistakes, and cleanse us from sin, that we may dwell in Your light. Amen.
