Traffic

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 18:2 – The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. (KJV)

Galatians 5:1 – Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! (MSG)

I was amazed one day as I was going for a walk. I saw a medium-sized dog wanting to cross the street. It was a very busy six-lane street, one of the busiest in our city. He stood and watched for a while. Then he went across one lane of traffic and stood and waited for the next lane to clear so he could go those few extra feet to the next lane. I stood in awe as I watched him go completely across all six lanes safely to the other side. I wondered if he was filled with fear. He certainly did not seem to be at all afraid. He looked very confident. I assume he had done this many times before and had built up the confidence to continue crossing busy streets. What about the first time though? It was likely very scary. After repeating this behaviour many times, he had the confidence to carry on. Yes, he was cautious, and maybe he was scared. But he didn't let that stop him. He had some place to go for some reason.

I thought about us as we go through life. Sometimes we are faced with crossing "traffic" that is seemingly unsafe. When we go against the flow of our ingrained behaviours, it can be scary. These behaviours could be addictions of some kind — approval addictions, or drug addictions, or control addictions. We know we need to step out from them and change our behaviours, but it is scary. It is hard. We try to do it on our own, but we fail miserably. We can rely only on Jesus Christ and His power in order to make the right choices continually.

From 2 Timothy 1:7, we know that "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (KJV) As we take the first step across the busy road of life to get to where we want to be, to where we need to be, let's remember to depend completely on the Lord. He is our strength.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, life can be very scary. We know that at times we need to make changes to bring glory and honour to Your Name, but we can't do it ourselves. We do want to be free. In order to be free, we have to step out to make those changes, while clinging to You the whole time. Help us, we pray. Amen.
