Unawares

Listen to this devotional:

Hebrews 13:2 – Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. (RSV)

Have you ever had one of those days when everything seems to be upside down? I surely have. At those times, my world is in turmoil, and peace eludes me. Then out of nowhere comes a friendly face, a listening ear, or a kind word. With one small action, the sunshine returns to my soul.

Some believe that angels live only in heaven. Who is it then — when we are discouraged and wracked with the pain of brokenness, guilt, and heartbreak — who comes to us in unexpected times? The world has not eyes to see as in paradise above, yet God in His mercy sends comfort, compassion and love, hope and encouragement in the form of a friend. His beauty is wrapped in a vision of love, and through angelic means, we are profoundly touched, changed, reconciled.

I ask myself, "What kind of friend am I?" Do I take the time to listen, to comfort, to sympathize? Have I ever been worthy of the term "earth angel"? Do I allow the Holy Spirit to quiet me so that I can hear the pain in another's voice?

Do you?

Prayer: Lord, we may never speak to thousands. We may not make it as a missionary in some faraway country. But Lord God, You give us such a wonderful privilege today, right here where we are. You allow us to be a friend. Help each of us be a friend to someone today. For Christ's sake, we pray. Amen.
