Sing A Song Of Praise

Thursday, December 11, 2014
Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Joy To The World"1 (Lyrics)

Psalm 66:1-2 – Praise God with shouts of joy, all people! Sing to the glory of his name; offer him glorious praise! (GNB)

Psalm 95:1-2 – Come, let us praise the Lord! Let us sing for joy to God, who protects us! Let us come before him with thanksgiving and sing joyful songs of praise. (GNB)

Ephesians 5:19-20 – Speak to one another with the words of psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing hymns and psalms to the Lord with praise in your hearts. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, always give thanks for everything to God the Father. (GNB)

One of God's greatest gifts to us is the gift of music and songs.

Here are some quotes about the power of music:

"Where words fail, music speaks." – Hans Christian Andersen

"Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens." – Maria von Trapp

"Music … will help dissolve your perplexities and purify your character and sensibilities, and in time of care and sorrow, will keep a fountain of joy alive in you." – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"My heart, which is so full to overflowing, has often been solaced and refreshed by music when sick and weary." – Martin Luther

At our church during the season of Advent last year, we looked at some of the songs in the Bible that were sung around the birth of Christ. On the first Sunday, we looked at Mary's Song in Luke 1:46-55, which begins, "My soul magnifies the Lord." At the end of the message, our minister encouraged us to write a song that week. I enjoy writing poems and songs and so I wrote a song of praise.

A Song of Praise

I lift Your name on high
To You this song I raise
For You alone are God
And worthy of my praise

A light in this dark world
You sent Your only Son
The perfect Lamb of God
He was the Chosen One

I praise His holy name
I lift my voice and sing
The One Who died for me
My Saviour and my King

He is our only hope
There is no other way
I open up my heart
And worship Him always

I sing a song of joy
I sing a song of praise
And by His grace alone
I'll praise Him all my days

He came for sins forgiven
He set the captives free
Rejoice O earth and heaven
And sing this song with me

O sing a song of glory
O sing a song of praise
O worship Him forever
Forever sing His praise

Sing glory to the Father
Sing glory to the Son
Sing glory to the Spirit
Emmanuel has come!

(Dee Renaud, 2013)

As we journey through Advent and sing and listen to the popular Christmas carols, let us remember the reason for the season and sing our own song of praise to the One Who came as a tiny Babe in Bethlehem to be the Saviour of the world.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the precious gift of Your Son Jesus, and we thank You for the gift of music. May we always sing our praises to You, You Who alone are worthy of our praise. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

    Hi Dee:
Did you write a tune also?

Beautiful Devotional, Beautiful Poem/Song of Praise. Dee, Thank you!! That’s just how new hymns come to be.
May the Blessings of Christmas be with you and your loved ones now and throughout 2015.

    Thanks for a great Poem!
Hope someone puts music to it and shares it with us by this time next year!
    God Bless You Dee.

A wonderful poem/song. It expresses all that we need to say when praising the Lord.
Congratulations. I am going to take the liberty of saving this poem and would like to read it to my ladies group at the January meeting.

    Dear Dee:
Thank you for the devotional and your lovely poem. Truly, we have so much to praise our Lord for. You have done it well.
    God bless you.

Good morning Dee, Lovely poem/song that you wrote.
Do you have someone to compose a suitable tune for it?
You have the lyrics, so now you need the melody/tune,harmonization etc by a musician.
    Blessed Christmas to you.

    Good morning Dee,
This devotional really spoke to me, as I too love music. Your song is wonderful. Do you have music for it? Or do you sing it to the tune of another hymn?
    Merry Christmas to you!
    Keep Singing,

    Hi Dee,
Thanks so very much for your devotional this morning. It inspired me to brighten my day and lift my heart by turning on my sacred music on my computer as I work! How often I forget it’s there and miss the blessings it provides. I pray all is well with you and the family and that this Christmas season will be filled with many gifts of God’s grace for all of you.
    Blessings, peace and love.

    Dear Dee,
I agree wholeheartedly! Music and the Word go hand in hand.
Sometimes, the music can speak to me as much or more than the sermon. The thoughts our ancestors of the faith are revealed to them by the Holy Spirit like, Isaac Watts, for instance; as much as when the writers wrote the scriptures. Hallelujah! Praise His name!
Thank you for writing these beautiful words of admonishing and praise. May you ands yours have a very blessed Christmas.

    Dear Dee Renaud,
    This is a beautiful devotional.
And thanks for the poem, simple and profound.

    What a lovely reminder.
