A Season Of Giving

Luke 6:30 – Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
Luke 6:38 – Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

What is the Christmas Season to you?
Is it wrapping generous gifts for Sue, for April, Agnes, and Hugh,
one for the teacher, and bus driver, too?
Giving a few to Grandpa and Grandma, Aunt Ethel, and Uncle Lou.
Is Christmas sending off brown paper packages
tied up with string while complaining of the cost of everything?
Is it making lists and checking them twice
making sure you've gotten everyone who's nice?
Is Christmas giving so it will be given to you?
Or do you give because you love?
Do you share because you truly care?

Christmas is truly a time of giving, caring and sharing. We intend to give unstintingly, but Scrooge lurks not far in the background as we anticipate what we will be given. The echo of the TV rings in our ears as a simple sound bite. "Our store will enable you to give like Santa, but save like Scrooge!" But Jesus, the child in the manger, points us to a better way. Give without expecting return. Give in this way, and God will give to us the Joy of Christmas — and that's the truth!

Prayer: Dear God, Enable us to give as you have given to us. May the Spirit of Christmas giving be truly a blessing of others who are less fortunate than we are. May we give in the Spirit of Christ Jesus. Amen.
