The Second Chance

Romans 6:23 – Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master. (MSG)

John 10:10 – I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. (MSG)

The phone would ring and the vet would be on the other end. "Can you come? Another dog has arrived."

Sometimes the animal had been abandoned. Sometimes it had been abused, flung from a car travelling the highway, and rescued by a passer-by witness to the whole affair. Others had been beaten or neglected, while still others were victims of the hard times that had beset their owners. Whatever the case, each one needed a second chance. Without that chance, death was the final verdict.

Without a second chance, death is also the final verdict for mankind. Man is born into sin. And sin is selfishness — all that we do or say or think which does not stem from the perfect love and will of God. The cost of sin is death. But the gift of God is life — real life, eternal life delivered by Jesus Christ. Jesus is the one who offers mankind a second chance — an opportunity for a brand new start. It is a chance to stop listening to sin and what it is forever telling us to do, and to begin listening to God, who is able to give us "a whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way!" (Romans 6:22 MSG)

When the vet called, we always responded, "Yes!" "Today, please listen, don't turn a deaf ear …" (Hebrews 4:7b MSG) If you have not already answered, "Yes!" to the second chance Jesus offers for life eternal, it's not yet too late.

Prayer: Lord God and wonderful Creator, Saviour of mankind, open our ears to your plea for life. Open our hearts to willingly say, "Yes" – "yes" to You for ourselves, and "yes" to You as you call us to pass along the good news that all may hear and know of the opportunity for a second chance in Jesus. Now and forever, all glory and honour and praise be Yours. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
