Old Faithful

Matthew 6:6 – But when you pray go to your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you. (GNB)

While on holiday last summer, we visited Yellowstone National Park in the United States. This is an amazing area, filled with hot springs, geysers, mud pots, and various other forms of natural phenomena.

We spent two-and-a-half days there, exploring as many of the fascinating features as possible. Our timing was great while we were there. We saw "Old Faithful" spout twice, and we saw almost all the regular geysers in action. One geyser had two smaller ones off to the side, and only erupted twice a day, but we managed to see that as well.

It was absolutely incredible to watch hot pools rise, bubble, and spout, to view steaming pools in sparkling gem colours, and to see a cone shape spewing water high into the air. Yet, even as awesome as they were, by late the second day, we spent less and less time at each feature. It seemed that we were just visiting some of the pools for the sake of being there, and not marvelling at each one in its own splendour.

Sometimes we pass over God in the same way. We know that He is there, and we may offer an occasional prayer in thanksgiving or in sorrow. But do we really take the time to be with Him in quiet times, in our everyday life? Or is God just there, like "Old Faithful", to turn to when we think we need Him?

Prayer: God in heaven, we often take You for granted. We don't make You a part of our everyday lives. You live in our hearts only when it is convenient. Give us Your peace in all aspects of our lives. It is in day-to-day living that we need You most. In Jesus' name. Amen.
