Mystery Stories

Ephesians 3:2-4 – If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given to you-ward; How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ). (KJV)

When I was young, Saturdays were something well worth looking towards. It meant a trip to town. First, there were piano lessons with my beloved teacher, a nun, with a sense of humour and a sensitivity for young fingers that sometimes hadn't practiced as much as was required for the piano piece that they were poised to play. Then there were figure skating lessons, where I longed to make the leaps and turns, but didn't trust myself quite enough to do it. Oh, I could do a lovely "Figure 8" and thought I'd really accomplished a lot when I learned to twirl and stop on the points of my picks at the toe.

And after that — the Library! During the week, I would fervently read the latest "Nancy Drew" mystery so that I could exchange it for another the following Saturday. When "Nancy" was finished, or I'd already read all the ones available, the next choice was "The Hardy Boys".

How I loved to read of their adventures, excitement welling up in me as they came close to being caught, then finally solved the mystery at hand. I think that sometimes I probably even imagined myself in their shoes, that I was the one finding the clues and solving the mystery.

Now I know that life is a "library", and God is the author of all the beautiful mysteries that surround us, waiting to be "read" every single day. He writes the mystery of the morning dew. He gives us glimpses of a mother eagle teaching her eaglets the mystery of learning how to fly. In streams, we see spawning salmon in their mysterious struggle upstream as they make their way home. Through birth and death, we learn the mystery that completes the circle of life.

In life's most beautiful mystery, we are loved just as we are by a God — a God who graced us with the birth and death of His Son, that we may be set free from our sins. How great an author is our God, for His word is the Bible and His works are the world.

Prayer: We give thanks to you O God, for the mystery in the mastery of all that is "life". In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
