The Flickering In The Woods

As I casually looked out my window the other morning, I saw a tiny red and sometimes green light, flickering in the woods. As I neared the window to get a closer look, I noticed a tiny water droplet dangling from a pine needle. I surmised that the sun's ray, as it shone onto the water droplet, produced this natural phenomenon.

The tiny light began to flicker, then stopped, and then flickered again. As time went by, the tiny light seemed to burn out and then disappear. But, to my surprise, there suddenly appeared another tiny light, opposite to where the other water droplet was. As time went on, the lights disappeared, and I was ready to move away from the window, when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw another tiny light springing to life. I thought how like this natural spectacle our lives are.

In Christ, we are to be those tiny lights, shining in this world, bringing joy and peace to someone who is lonely or sick. We bring a light of friendship, by visiting someone in the hospital. We bring a light of care, by helping someone in need. We bring a light of love, by giving someone a much-needed hug. We bring a light of compassion, by listening to someone talk about a concern. By sharing God's love for humankind, we reveal God's Son, Jesus, to a world in desperate need of healing.

John 12:35-36 – Jesus therefore said to them, "For a little while longer the light is among you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become sons of light." (NASB)

Matthew 5:16 – Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (NASB)

Prayer: Thank You, God, for sending us Your Son, Jesus, the true light who came into the world to enlighten us. Help us to shine His light to all who are hurting and who are in need. Amen.
