God: Seeking And Searching

Wednesday, April 30, 1997

Psalm 139:1-3,6 – O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high I cannot attain it.

Jack Miles' book, God: A Biography, bases deductions about God's nature and motives on God's words and actions as recorded in the Hebrew Bible, the section we call the Old Testament. To my knowledge this has never been done or even attempted before. Miles has God in a search for self-understanding and self-identification so similar to our own. And the source of God's self-revelation is humanity, we who have been created in the image of God.

And do you dare wonder, with him, what God is really like and why we were created and what we really learn from this thing we call life and existence?

Fascinating? Most certainly! Answerable? Maybe the only answer lies deep within you.

Prayer: God of revelation, I come seeking You this day. I read sacred words and wonder anew about your being and your love. Lead me this day to a deeper understanding of your will and your way. Grant us a fuller vision of you as we walk through this day. Amen.
