Striving To Stay In The Light

Isaiah 2:5 – O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord. (KJV)

John 11:9 – Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. (KJV)

1 John 1:7 – But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (KJV)

Do you ever start reading something, convinced that you know the main thought or plot and/or how it is going to end up? I do, on occasion, and am sometimes correct. Not so, however, with Julie Bowles' devotional on May 16, 2008, entitled Chasing Sunbeams. By the end of the third paragraph, I was sure I knew the thrust of her devotional. But I was very wrong.

Some time ago, a gentleman named Paul Harvey started a radio program he called The Rest of the Story. Now being done by his son, the thrust of it is that they tell the story behind the story. While this devotional is definitely not the story behind the story, it is the inspiration which came from Julie's devotional. My thought was, what a beautiful analogy was being made between the cats constantly seeking and staying in the light and warmth of the sun, just as we strive to seek out and stay in the light and warmth of the Son.

Just as the cats needed to keep moving to keep in the light of the sun, so too, do we, in our everyday challenges — our griefs and troubles, our trials and tribulations — need to keep our focus on, and keep walking in, His light. For some, it is a constant battle in reaching for God's light amidst a seemingly never-ending barrage of darkness.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, may we ever strive to stay in Your light. May we remember to keep those in our prayers who struggle to keep their faith, when faith is all they have left to keep. May we hold in our hearts those whose hearts have been broken by the unspeakable loss of a loved one, leaving them questioning Your existence. Be with us as we strive to walk in Your light, that we may be a light for You, to others. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.
