Hand-Me-Downs

Listen to this devotional:

Ephesians 6:11 – Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (RSV)

Folks from my generation generally appreciate hand-me-downs, because we have spent most of our life in them. Being just a little younger than some relatives and a little thinner than others reaped us bags and bags of clothes that were just like brand new.

Some may have an aversion to gently used clothing, but campaigns like "Go Green" and "Save the Earth" have made it popular once more. Hand-me-down is back in style — just in time for us to find out that they are not hand-me-downs at all! No! Listen to this line from Louis L'Amour's western saga, Treasure Mountain:

"All the clothes I'd had since the time ma wove and stitched them with her own hands I'd either made myself from buckskin or they were hand-me-downs from the shelves of cattle store towns."

Store-bought! And now we must face the truth. All this time, we have only been wearing second-hand!

Thank God that His clothing for us is never second-hand. When we put on the whole armour of God, we can suit up as fresh and new today as we did the day before.

Here's a thought: "'Hand-me-down' that Bible off that dusty shelf. Read about that special outfit in Ephesians chapter 6. Put it on. Brand new. Free. Again today."

Prayer: Lord, we bless Your name! Thank You again today for the gift of fresh, new spiritual clothing and the power of the Holy Spirit to put it on and walk in it. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
