"Behind You"

Listen to this devotional:

Isaiah 30:21 – Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." (NIV)

I am the baker in a busy little shop where there is one phrase which we all hear over and over again: "Behind you." When I am busy carrying loaded trays or straps of bread from the proofing room, I often hear, "Behind you."

As I am pulling piping hot loaves from the big oven, it is not unusual to hear, "Behind you." As the cook or the dishwasher pass by with knives or other sharp instruments, they call out, "Behind you." "Behind you" — what comforting and wonderful words, words that help keep all of us in the bakery as safe as possible as we work: safe from falling, safe from burning myself or others, safe from being stabbed or cut, safe from being bumped or knocked over, safe from bumping and knocking over someone else.

"Behind you" have in fact become two of my most favourite words, for they not only help keep me safe at work, they also remind me of the One who endeavours to keep me safe throughout life. God has spoken through the prophet Isaiah in today's verse, saying, "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'"

How marvellous that God loves and cares for each one of us so much that He makes a point of speaking to us in ways that we can hear and understand, in ways that help keep us safe and well when we listen and obey: safe from making wrong and hurtful decisions, safe from speaking sharp and cutting words, safe from the sting and burn of sin.

"Behind you." Listen today. Hear! Be blessed!

Prayer: Dear Lord, how grateful we are that You are with us every day in every way. Encourage us in our faith, to believe and trust in Your faithful presence and guidance. In Christ's name. Amen.
