Jeremiah 33:3 – Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. (NRSV)
My twelve-year old grandson asked if he could install some games on my computer, knowing that I am not a game person. I gave him permission to install a couple, waiting to see what games he had in his mind for his grandmother.
He finds me playing once in a while, and he has a pleased look on his face. I found the checker game interesting and began it on an easy level, playing the game when I wanted to sit for awhile or was too tired to work at anything.
There are levels from easy to hard. The computer wins often. Sometimes a draw comes around, but I am a loser most of the time, and I am beginning to see my mistakes after a wrong move. I talk to myself to watch my moves and come up with foolproof strategy. I enjoy moving up a level.
Our journey in life is much like that. At first, we are on a beginner level, learning from our parents the first moves. As we step up the levels in our years, we learn right and wrong moves, and what follows.
So it is with our spiritual calling. We are against the power of darkness, and if we are not careful and instructed, the devil wins time and again. He is not satisfied with a draw, but seeks to win every time. To win, we must be teachable and ready to learn from God's Word to be wise to avoid Satan's moves to destroy us.
On account of our corrupt nature, followers of Christ still have sin. We suffer from it, and we confess it, God forgives us for it, and we fight against it. Sin must not rule in our lives because we are born of God.
Prayer: God in heaven, we come before You, O Holy One, with supplications for righteousness for Your name's sake. We have the right to become Your children in Jesus' name, according to Your lovingkindness. We come, one and all, confessing our sins, and sincerely desire to be freed of them. Merciful God, instruct us in the things we have not known, and hear our prayer. Amen.
