Life's Strollers

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "God Of Our Fathers Whose Almighty Hand"1 (Lyrics)

1 Corinthians 3:2 – I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able receive it, and even now you are still not able. (NKJV)

I was sitting in a lab, waiting, while my wife was giving blood for tests, when a young mom came in with her baby. The infant was housed in one of the most classy strollers I'd ever seen, complete with padding and protective gear.

Then an elderly lady came in pushing her rather plain stroller (or "walker") and sat down beside the young mother. As I gazed at them both together, I thought to myself, "Isn't life like that — moving from one type of stroller to another!"

In reality, many of us will someday use, or may now be using, a stroller, which can feel somewhat demeaning when out in public. As we move through the various seasons of life, however, it really is important that we stroll with the Lord. Pardon the pun!

In our walk with the Lord, we start off having to be carried and discipled in the faith, until after a time of learning from the Word of God and experiencing His grace, we become mature Christians. If we trudge through life remaining as baby Christians, however — having to be carried in our faith walk — later in life, we'll require a spiritual walker to uphold our beliefs. In other words, we'll find that we can't stand on our own when our faith is tested.

Hebrews 5:12 – For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. (NKJV)

It is so sad (as the apostle Paul must have felt) when we find ourselves or our fellow believers demonstrating a juvenile type of understanding of God in talk and walk.

Prayer: Lord God, may we always be reminded of the importance of continually growing in the knowledge of You. Help us to keep strong in our faith, as we read and meditate on Your Word, pray, and fellowship with the body of Christ. May we be steadfast in the faith even in our old age. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
