The Million Dollar Club

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Twas On That Night"1 (Lyrics)

Psalm 127:3 — Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. (KJV)

Psalm 144:12 – That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace. (KJV)

Last year, a friend told me someone had welcomed her to The Million Dollar Club.

My obviously naive knowledge of that phrase was limited. I thought that it had to do with real estate agents, and knowing that she was not in that profession, I asked what it meant.

Apparently, having a child of each sex is referred to as belonging to The Million Dollar Club. Although I didn't say anything, the term is offensive to me. Children are God's blessing to us, regardless of a family's composition.

My great grandmother, grandmother, and mother are from families of three girls. As well, we have three daughters, and at present, four granddaughters. The implication of that club's moniker excludes all but one female in each family, as it does to families which are comprised of males only, as is that of my husband and his brother.

Admittedly, through the years, when telling people of the birth of a third daughter or a second granddaughter, I have been shocked when some responded with "Oh, too bad," or "What's wrong with your family? You don't have any boys." My usual response is that we feel blessed to have our children and grandchildren.

Let us give thanks that God designs our families, and rather than attempting to aspire to an arbitrary human definition, let us rejoice in the birth of each new life created in God's image.

Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the children with whom we are blessed. May we accept these little lives whom You have entrusted us to care for, to guide, to shine in Your light, and to appreciate, honour, and respect each person for who they are, regardless of their gender. In Your name, we pray and give thanks for this day. Amen.
